Mobile Broadband
Unquestionably, one of the most convenient wireless solutions, mobile broadband gives consumers the capability of accessing the internet at any location. Considering that the feature is relatively new, it is quite expensive. However, for those that need to connect to the internet while on the road, it could be worth every penny.
With mobile broadband, there are usually two associated costs. First, one must obtain a mobile broadband device that can harness an internet signal. Typically, a mobile broadband router is the easiest solution. However, in some cases, consumers purchase a wireless air card that can serve the same purpose. To gain internet access, a consumer must first connect the mobile broadband device to his or her internet. After that, one must use the connection offered by a purchased data plan. Purchased data plans can usually be quite expensive, as costs are incurred on a monthly basis. One of the most common mobile broadband signals that is used is 3G connectivity. Consumers with a mobile broadband device can link it to their laptop to connect to the 3G network. Several wireless providers are hoping to offer stronger signals, as has been seen by the recent availability of the 4G network through certain carriers.
One similar option to mobile broadband is tethering. This solution involves one connecting his or her phone to a laptop and then using the phone's internet signal to gain connection through the laptop. In other words, the laptop essentially becomes a wireless hotspot. This method of connectivity is probably cheapest, as it does not involve purchasing a mobile broadband router or aircard. However, some prefer not to drain their cell phone battery, as using the phone as a wireless hotspot can decrease overall battery life.
Mobile broadband connectivity is a fairly new technological innovation. As a result, service providers are in the early stages of determining how consumers are responding. Mobile broadband costs are known to be a bit expensive, as additional equipment may be required to access the internet. Most of the consumer market that is taking advantage of the mobile broadband capability involves those that travel frequently. Once the solution has been mastered, the cost will most likely decrease. It will not be until then that mobile broadband connectivity becomes a feasible option for all internet users. Regardless, the technology of mobile broadband is a testament to the advancements that have been made in the wireless industry, just remember to add a bit of common sense to the mix because making your laptop, computer and/or phone the center of your life is not exactly healthy (radiation levels, eye strain and the list could go on and on).
